The walls have never been breached by any attackers and the only damage to the settlement in an attack was an outlying turret. The happiness was at 80+ and stable, commonly climbing.

If you see that the happiness has dropped a point, this means that the kidnapping quest is present. Immediately head there and complete it, and you’ll both remove the negative arrow and turn it into a positive arrow.
